German project cargo and heavy-lift logistics provider Eckship has announced a newbuilding program that could introduce as many as six new heavy-lift vessels to its fleet. The company anticipates the first vessel delivery in the second quarter of 2028, with subsequent ships arriving at short intervals thereafter. This strategic expansion is designed to strengthen Eckship's market position in the project cargo, heavy-lift, and breakbulk segments.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signifies a potential increase in specialized vessel capacity for oversized and complex shipments from 2028 onwards. While immediate capacity impacts are not expected, the long-term addition of these vessels could offer more options for project cargo movements, potentially influencing routing and scheduling for large industrial components, wind energy equipment, and other heavy-lift items. The enhanced fleet may also contribute to improved schedule reliability for these niche services.
