The HARC (Hit-And-Run Cargo) team successfully seized 518 kilograms of cannabis that had been smuggled from Canada into Europe. The illicit substance was found cleverly hidden within a specially constructed false bottom of a delivery van. This discovery took place on May 11 during a routine inspection at the Port of Antwerp.
For freight forwarders and logistics operations managers, this incident highlights the ongoing risks of cargo being used for illicit purposes. While this particular shipment involved a road vehicle transported by sea, it underscores the importance of stringent security protocols, thorough documentation checks, and vigilance at all stages of the supply chain, especially for cross-border movements. Such seizures can lead to delays, increased scrutiny for certain cargo types or lanes, and potential reputational damage for carriers and forwarders if their services are unknowingly exploited. It also reinforces the need for robust customs compliance and due diligence when onboarding new clients or handling unusual cargo requests.
