Delta Air Lines has announced its intention to outfit its full fleet of 240 Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft with Finlets developed by Vortex Control Technologies (VCT). This initiative is designed to improve the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft, leading to a reduction in fuel consumption and a corresponding decrease in carbon dioxide emissions. The decision to implement this modification across the fleet comes after an extensive evaluation and testing phase conducted jointly by Delta and VCT.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this news primarily concerns passenger aviation, it highlights a broader industry trend towards sustainability and operational efficiency. Reduced fuel burn for passenger aircraft can indirectly influence overall airline operating costs, potentially impacting belly cargo capacity pricing in the long term as airlines seek to optimize all revenue streams. Furthermore, it signals a commitment to environmental goals, which aligns with increasing shipper demand for greener supply chain solutions. This move could contribute to Delta's overall sustainability profile, a factor increasingly considered by corporate clients when selecting carriers.
