Norwegian Hydrogen has announced that its Hellesylt Hydrogen Hub has received Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). This makes it the first hydrogen production site in Norway to achieve this status. The certification, granted on July 31, confirms that the renewable hydrogen produced at the Hellesylt facility adheres to the European Union's stringent criteria for sustainability, renewable electricity sourcing, and comprehensive traceability from the power source to the final product.
This certification is a significant milestone as it qualifies hydrogen from Hellesylt for various applications, compliance markets, and support schemes across Europe. For freight forwarders and shippers, this development is crucial as it expands the availability of certified green fuels, particularly for maritime transport. The increasing supply of RFNBO-compliant hydrogen can help carriers meet decarbonization targets and navigate evolving EU regulations like the EU ETS for shipping, potentially reducing the cost and complexity of sourcing sustainable bunker fuels. It also signals a growing trend towards verifiable green energy sources in the logistics supply chain.
