The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) has released a report highlighting biomethane as a crucial option for the shipping industry to achieve recognized and scalable emissions reductions in the early stages of the IMO's Net Zero Framework (NZF) implementation. This hinges on the allowance of mass balancing, a method that would enable the industry to account for biomethane's environmental benefits more flexibly.
The report, titled "Biomethane supply potential and its relevance for shipping by 2030," indicates that during the initial years of NZF, shipping will likely depend on transitional strategies that can deliver significant emissions cuts both rapidly and economically. This suggests that biomethane could serve as a bridge fuel while the development and scaling of more complex e-fuels and advanced biofuels continue.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the potential acceptance of mass balancing for biomethane could introduce more flexibility in fuel sourcing and compliance strategies. It might offer a more accessible and potentially cheaper avenue for carriers to meet immediate decarbonization targets, which could indirectly influence freight rates by stabilizing fuel costs associated with green premiums.
