The German automobile club ADAC, in partnership with Euro NCAP and collaborators from Sweden and the United States, has published results from recent crash tests. These tests demonstrate that the legally mandated rear underrun protection systems on trucks offer inadequate safety for passenger vehicles involved in rear-end collisions. The current regulatory framework for these safety devices is deemed insufficient by the researchers, who advocate for more stringent approval standards.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, this information highlights a potential area of concern regarding road safety and future regulatory changes. While not directly impacting freight rates or capacity, any revisions to truck safety standards could influence vehicle specifications and procurement in the long term. Stricter requirements might lead to increased costs for new truck purchases or modifications to existing fleets, which could indirectly affect operational expenses. Forwarders should monitor developments in vehicle safety legislation, especially within the EU, as these could eventually translate into new compliance obligations for their road transport partners.
