Glasgow Prestwick Airport has announced the commencement of a new direct scheduled air cargo route connecting to Shanghai Pudong International Airport. This development is set to provide Scottish exporters with improved access to one of Asia's most significant freight centers, thereby expanding the airport's existing air cargo network with China.
Air China Cargo, a key operator at Prestwick, will be adjusting its flight schedule. The carrier plans to re-route three of its four weekly Boeing 777 services from Guangzhou to Shanghai. Despite this change in destination, Air China Cargo will continue to operate a total of 11 scheduled weekly flights to China from Prestwick, ensuring consistent connectivity.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this new direct service to Shanghai offers a more streamlined and potentially faster route for cargo originating from or destined for Scotland and the broader UK. The shift from Guangzhou to Shanghai, a larger and more central economic hub, could lead to improved transit times and greater efficiency for shipments targeting eastern China and beyond. It also provides an additional option for air freight capacity on this important trade lane, potentially impacting rates and space availability for time-sensitive cargo.
