The UK Chamber of Shipping has published a policy paper titled "Designing a Workable UK Maritime Fuel Standard: Lessons from the implementation of FuelEU Maritime." This document provides practical recommendations for the UK Department for Transport as it develops its own domestic maritime fuel standard, as outlined in the Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy.
The paper leverages industry experience gained since the FuelEU Maritime regulation became effective in January 2025. The UK Chamber supports the overarching goal of accelerating maritime decarbonization but stresses that effective regulation depends not only on ambitious targets but also on practical and workable implementation.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signifies potential future changes in fuel requirements for vessels operating in UK waters. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity is not direct, the eventual implementation of a UK fuel standard could lead to increased operational costs for carriers, which may be passed on to shippers through surcharges. Forwarders should monitor these regulatory developments as they could influence carrier choices and routing strategies for UK-bound or UK-originating cargo, particularly concerning the availability and cost of compliant fuels.
