Finnish marine propulsion specialist Steerprop has announced it will provide its advanced contra-rotating propeller (CRP) technology for Estonia's first fully electric passenger ferry. The vessel is currently being constructed by Polish shipyard CRIST SA for the Estonian State Fleet. This ferry, anticipated to commence operations in 2028, will be powered predominantly by a battery system that recharges onshore. Auxiliary biodiesel generators will be included to ensure functionality during severe weather conditions or emergency situations.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signifies a continued trend towards electrification in maritime transport, particularly for short-sea shipping and ferry services. While this specific project does not directly impact global container rates or capacity, it highlights the ongoing investment in sustainable shipping solutions. The adoption of electric ferries can contribute to reduced emissions in coastal areas and potentially influence port infrastructure development for charging facilities in the long term. As more electric vessels enter service, it could lead to cleaner, albeit potentially slower, regional transport options.
