The Port of Rotterdam experienced a 0.9% increase in overall cargo throughput during the initial nine months of 2026 compared to the same period in the previous year. The total volume handled reached 323.2 million tons. This growth was largely attributed to increased movements of specific commodities, including coal, crude oil, various mineral oil products, and other dry bulk goods. Concurrently, container traffic destined for the port's hinterland also demonstrated an upward trend.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this indicates a stable and slightly growing operational environment at one of Europe's largest ports. Increased container transport to the hinterland suggests robust inland connectivity, which can improve transit times and reliability for European distribution. The rise in bulk cargo volumes might not directly impact container operations but reflects broader industrial activity that could indirectly influence port services and capacity utilization.
