Sogestran Group has started the construction phase for the first of two multi-fuel bunker barges. These vessels are being built for Maritima, a bunker company under Sogestran, and its client Petroineos Lavéra. The initial steel-cutting ceremony was recently held at the China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Yangzhou Dingheng Shipyard.
These new barges are designed with the capability to transport three distinct fuel products concurrently. Furthermore, they will possess dual certification, allowing them to handle both oil and chemical products. This development follows Sogestran Group's announcement in October 2025 regarding the order for these specialized vessels.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the introduction of multi-fuel bunker barges signifies a potential increase in the availability and flexibility of bunkering services. This could support vessels utilizing alternative fuels, contributing to more diverse and potentially greener shipping routes. Enhanced bunkering infrastructure can improve schedule reliability and reduce operational delays for carriers, indirectly benefiting shippers through more consistent transit times.
