DEME has been selected to undertake the installation of 69 wind turbines for the Zeevonk offshore wind farm, a significant 1 GW project located in the Dutch North Sea. This contract is contingent on the final investment decision by project partners Vattenfall and CIP. The installation work is projected to commence in 2028, with the NorseEnergi vessel designated to support the construction efforts.
This development signifies ongoing momentum in the offshore wind sector, which is crucial for Europe's renewable energy targets. For freight forwarders, this type of project translates into consistent demand for specialized heavy-lift and project cargo logistics, particularly for the transport of large components like turbine blades, nacelles, and foundations. It also underscores the need for robust port marshalling capabilities and specialized vessel charters, impacting capacity and potentially rates for breakbulk services in the region.
The successful execution of such large-scale offshore wind projects relies heavily on precise scheduling and coordination of oversized and heavy-lift cargo movements, from manufacturing sites to marshalling ports and then to the installation site. This contract ensures a steady pipeline of work for specialized maritime operators and associated logistics providers in the coming years.
