Ocean Network Express (ONE) and ClassNK, a prominent classification society, have embarked on a collaborative research initiative focused on evaluating the performance of roll damping tanks (RDTs) installed on large container vessels. This project aims to gather and analyze actual operational data from ONE's fleet to determine how effectively RDTs reduce vessel roll motion in diverse sea states.
Roll damping tanks are designed to counteract the rolling motion of a ship, which can be particularly pronounced on large container carriers. Excessive rolling can lead to cargo shifting, potential damage, and an uncomfortable environment for the crew. By collecting data under real operating conditions, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the practical benefits of these systems.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, improved roll damping can translate into enhanced cargo safety and reduced risk of damage, especially for sensitive or high-value goods. Greater vessel stability could also contribute to more reliable transit times by minimizing the need for speed reductions in rough weather. This research could inform future vessel designs and operational practices, potentially leading to more secure and efficient ocean transport.
ONE will supply onboard measurement data from its vessels equipped with RDTs. This data will be crucial for ClassNK to conduct a thorough analysis and validate the efficacy of these systems.
