The Methanol Institute (MI) and Green Marine have officially partnered to accelerate the adoption of methanol as a marine fuel. This collaboration will initially concentrate on three critical areas: establishing comprehensive maritime training programs for methanol operations, co-authoring policy papers to support its integration, and offering essential technical guidance for safe handling and bunkering.
This initiative comes as the maritime industry sees an increasing number of vessels capable of running on methanol. The focus is now shifting towards the practical aspects of operating these ships safely and efficiently, including crew competency, fuel handling protocols, bunkering procedures, and emergency preparedness.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signals a growing commitment to decarbonization within the shipping sector. As more carriers invest in methanol-fueled vessels, it could lead to new service offerings on specific trade lanes, potentially impacting routing decisions and bunker surcharge structures in the long term. Understanding these operational shifts will be crucial for supply chain planning and compliance with evolving environmental regulations.
