Marlink has announced the completion of a significant upgrade, converting an existing Intellian C700 Iridium Certus terminal to a fully functional Iridium Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) on board Fugro's offshore supply vessel, Fugro Revelation. This achievement is notable as it represents the first such upgrade globally.
This development enhances the vessel's emergency communication capabilities, ensuring compliance with international maritime safety standards. For freight forwarders and operations managers, while not directly impacting cargo rates or capacity, this upgrade signifies improved safety protocols for vessels involved in offshore support, which can indirectly contribute to greater operational reliability and reduced risk in project cargo and specialized marine logistics. Enhanced GMDSS functionality ensures more robust distress alerting and communication, which is crucial for vessels operating in remote or high-risk areas.
The successful implementation on the Fugro Revelation demonstrates the feasibility of upgrading existing satellite communication systems to meet evolving safety requirements without requiring a complete hardware overhaul. This could pave the way for similar upgrades across other fleets, improving overall maritime safety infrastructure.
