Mammoet and Sarens, two prominent heavy-lift and specialized transport companies, have been awarded a major contract for the transportation and installation of two 8,500-tonne bridge arches in Rotterdam. This substantial undertaking is a critical component of the Netherlands' ongoing Van Brienenoord Bridge renewal program, which is slated for completion by 2033.
The project involves highly complex marine operations, with the installation phases specifically scheduled for 2030 and 2032. Such operations typically require specialized vessels, precise engineering, and careful coordination to manage the immense weight and dimensions of the bridge spans.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this project highlights the continued demand for specialized heavy-lift and project cargo services, particularly in infrastructure development. While the immediate impact on general cargo capacity or rates is minimal due to the long lead time, it underscores the need for forwarders to be aware of large-scale infrastructure projects that can temporarily affect port access, waterway navigation, or require specific permits for oversized cargo movements in the region during the installation periods. Forwarders handling project cargo may find opportunities in supporting ancillary logistics for such large-scale construction.
