The IJssel River, a vital waterway in the Netherlands, has reverted to two-way shipping traffic between Arnhem and Zutphen. This decision by Rijkswaterstaat comes after an increase in the river's water level, which had previously necessitated a one-way traffic system. For over two weeks, since September 25, vessels were restricted to sailing only in the direction of Arnhem.
This temporary restriction likely impacted inland navigation schedules and transit times, particularly for barges originating from Germany or other upstream locations needing to travel against the current towards the German border or other destinations. The return to two-way traffic will alleviate potential delays and improve operational efficiency for freight forwarders and shippers utilizing this route for inland European transport.
