PowerCell Group has announced a new order worth SEK 27 million (approximately $2.7 million) for fuel cell systems and related engineering services. This order is for two additional hydrogen-electric bulk carriers being built for GMI Group AS. The system includes ten of PowerCell's Marine System 225 fuel cells, which collectively will provide more than 2 MW of power. Deliveries for this order are anticipated between 2027 and 2028.
This latest order builds upon an initial agreement announced in September 2025, effectively doubling the scope of the collaboration from two to four vessels. The expansion signifies a growing commitment to hydrogen-electric propulsion in the maritime sector.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development indicates a continued trend towards decarbonization in shipping. While these are bulk carriers, the adoption of hydrogen-electric technology in newbuilds suggests a future shift in vessel types and potentially new bunkering infrastructure requirements. This could influence long-term vessel availability and routing options as the industry transitions to greener fuels, although direct rate impacts for containerized cargo are not immediate.
