Hapag-Lloyd, a major container shipping line, is set to significantly expand its presence in Africa by opening new customer service offices in Namibia, Rwanda, and Burundi. These new facilities will become operational on October 1, 2026. The move includes establishing a direct local presence in Namibia and a new office in Kigali, Rwanda, which will also serve customers in Burundi. This strategic expansion is designed to bolster Hapag-Lloyd's service capabilities and network reach within these African nations.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this expansion signifies enhanced local support and potentially more streamlined logistics processes for shipments to and from these countries. A direct presence can lead to improved communication, faster issue resolution, and better access to local market intelligence. This could also mean more competitive rates and improved schedule reliability as Hapag-Lloyd deepens its commitment to these trade lanes. For landlocked countries like Rwanda and Burundi, a stronger carrier presence in a regional hub like Kigali could simplify inland logistics and customs procedures, ultimately reducing transit times and operational complexities for shippers.
This expansion aligns with the broader trend of major carriers investing in direct regional operations to capture growth in emerging markets and offer more comprehensive end-to-end logistics solutions.
