Hambantota International Port (HIP) has reached a significant operational milestone, recording a cumulative container throughput exceeding one million TEUs. This achievement comes since the port's new quay cranes were put into service in 2025, indicating a substantial expansion in its container handling capabilities and overall activity. In 2025, HIP processed 428,036 TEUs, and this volume increased to 574,196 TEUs by the current year-to-date in 2026, bringing the total to 1,002,232 TEUs.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this increased throughput at Hambantota suggests growing capacity and potentially improved efficiency for transshipment and regional cargo movements. Enhanced port capabilities could offer alternative routing options and potentially reduce transit times for shipments destined for or originating from the Indian Ocean region. This development may also lead to more competitive pricing for services through HIP as its operational scale expands.
