Shipments of iron ore originating from U.S. ports on the Great Lakes experienced a 1.2% reduction in September when compared to the same period last year, amounting to 4.6 million tons. This monthly volume also registered an 11.4% decrease against the average for September over the past five years. Despite this monthly dip, the cumulative iron ore trade for the year-to-date stands at 32.2 million tons, indicating a 2.4% increase compared to 2025 figures.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data indicates a slight softening in demand for bulk iron ore transport on the Great Lakes for the specific month of September. While the year-to-date trend remains positive, the monthly decline could suggest minor fluctuations in industrial activity or inventory adjustments affecting raw material movements. This might lead to short-term availability of bulk vessel capacity in the region, though the overall market appears stable.
