The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD), in collaboration with AIM Horizon Investments and Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), has committed funding to two distinct projects involving wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS). This financial backing is provided through the Fund for Energy Efficiency Technologies (FEET), an initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of greener maritime technologies.
These projects are part of a broader industry effort to reduce carbon emissions from shipping operations. Wind-assisted propulsion offers a promising avenue for improving fuel efficiency and lowering the environmental footprint of vessels by harnessing wind power to supplement conventional engines.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the successful development and deployment of WAPS could contribute to a more sustainable supply chain. While direct impacts on immediate rates or capacity are not expected, these advancements align with increasing demands for eco-friendly logistics solutions. Over time, widespread adoption could lead to lower operational costs for carriers, potentially influencing freight rates and enhancing the availability of green shipping options.
