EST-Floattech, based in the Netherlands, has announced a new agreement with Siemens Energy to deliver the battery system for a new Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) ordered by Marco Polo Marine. The 'CSOV Plus' is currently being built at Marco Polo Marine's shipyard in Batam, Indonesia. Siemens Energy is serving as the system integrator for the vessel's hybrid power plant.
EST-Floattech will supply its Octopus HE modules, providing over 1 MWh of capacity. This battery system is designed to support the vessel's hybrid operations and enhance its dynamic positioning (DP) capabilities. The vessel's design was developed by Salt Ship Design from Norway.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development highlights the ongoing trend towards hybrid and electric propulsion in the maritime sector, particularly for specialized vessels like CSOVs. While not directly impacting container or general cargo rates, it signifies a broader industry shift towards more sustainable and efficient vessel operations. This could indirectly influence the availability and cost of support vessels for offshore projects, which might be relevant for project cargo and breakbulk logistics involving offshore wind or oil and gas developments. The use of advanced battery systems contributes to reduced fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with global decarbonization efforts.
