Turkish Cargo is making a substantial investment of $2.3 billion to expand its SMARTIST 2.0 cargo facility. This strategic move is a cornerstone of the carrier's ambitious 2033 growth plan, aiming to significantly enhance its global air cargo operations. The upgraded facility is projected to become operational by the end of 2028.
The expansion will effectively double the combined annual capacity of the SMARTIST hub to an impressive 4.5 million tonnes. Key improvements include advanced automation, state-of-the-art temperature-controlled infrastructure, and integrated digital systems, all designed to streamline cargo handling and improve efficiency.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this investment signals a significant increase in air cargo capacity and improved service quality, particularly for temperature-sensitive and high-value shipments through Istanbul. The enhanced automation and digital systems could lead to faster processing times and greater reliability, potentially impacting transit times and operational costs for cargo moving via Turkish Cargo's network. The expanded capacity also suggests a more stable supply of airfreight space, which could help mitigate future capacity crunches and offer more competitive pricing options.
