In Rotterdam, the price difference between B30-VLSFO (a biofuel blend) and standard Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) has expanded considerably. Over the past week, the cost of B30-VLSFO increased by $12 per metric ton, while the price of conventional VLSFO in the Dutch port decreased by $73 per metric ton during the same period. This divergence has resulted in an $85 per metric ton widening of the premium for B30-VLSFO, bringing it to $255 per metric ton.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this significant widening of the biofuel premium means that the cost of opting for lower-carbon fuel alternatives has become substantially higher. This could influence carrier decisions regarding fuel procurement, potentially leading some to favor conventional VLSFO to manage operational expenses, especially if the price gap persists or grows. Such a shift might slow the adoption of biofuels in the short term, impacting efforts to reduce emissions within supply chains. Forwarders should monitor bunker price trends closely as these fluctuations directly affect carrier surcharges and overall shipping costs.
