ACIA Aero Leasing has successfully delivered the world's first ATR 72-600 passenger aircraft converted to a freighter (P2F) with a Large Cargo Door (LCD) to FedEx. The Ireland-based lessor announced this significant milestone via a LinkedIn post on October 15, 2026. The aircraft, registered as MSN 1239, represents a notable development for the ATR 72-600 series, specifically tailored for enhanced cargo operations.
This delivery is crucial for regional air cargo networks, particularly for integrators like FedEx, as it provides increased capacity and improved efficiency for handling larger or bulkier freight. The addition of a large cargo door allows for easier loading and unloading of unit load devices (ULDs) and oversized shipments, which was previously a limitation for smaller regional freighters. This development is expected to bolster FedEx's ability to serve regional routes and expand its express delivery capabilities in markets where ATR aircraft are optimally suited.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this means potentially more flexible and efficient air cargo options for regional shipments, especially for time-sensitive or odd-sized goods. The enhanced capacity of these P2F aircraft could lead to improved transit times and better service reliability on feeder routes, complementing larger hub operations. It may also open up new possibilities for direct regional air connections, reducing reliance on road transport for certain cargo types.
Looking ahead, this delivery could pave the way for more ATR 72-600 P2F conversions with LCDs, as other carriers and lessors observe the operational benefits demonstrated by FedEx. This trend would further strengthen the regional air cargo market, offering more specialized aircraft solutions for diverse freight requirements.
