Global commodity trader Trafigura has announced the formation of a new subsidiary, Volare Shipping Ltd., which will be responsible for the ownership and operation of its oil tanker fleet. The initial fleet will comprise six existing Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) and eight newbuild vessels that are currently on order. A key feature of these newbuilds is their 'ammonia-ready' dual-fuel capability, indicating a strategic move towards future-proofing the fleet with lower-emission fuel options.
Furthermore, these new vessels will be equipped with advanced internal tank coatings and heating systems. This enhancement will allow them to transport a more diverse range of cargo types beyond traditional crude oil, offering increased versatility in their operations.
