The White Bay Cruise Terminal in Sydney is close to launching Australia's first shore-powered facility for cruise ships. The onshore power supply (OPS) system, a two-storey structure, has been installed. This system is designed to transform 33,000 volts from the local power grid into the appropriate voltage and frequency required by visiting cruise vessels. The Port Authority of New South Wales (NSW) anticipates that this technology will reduce carbon emissions by more than 4,000 tonnes each year.
This initiative aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the maritime industry and reduce the environmental impact of port operations. By enabling ships to shut down their auxiliary engines while docked, shore power significantly lowers local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
For freight forwarders and supply chain managers, while this specific project directly impacts the cruise sector, it signals a broader trend towards stricter environmental regulations and green infrastructure investment in ports.
