Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into an agreement with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to provide operational services for the Mirai II, an LNG dual-fuelled Arctic research vessel. This vessel marks a significant milestone as it will be Japan's first research ship equipped with icebreaking capabilities, designed to serve as an international research platform.
The Mirai II is scheduled to commence its Arctic Ocean expeditions in the summer of 2027. In anticipation of taking over operational control, MOL has already initiated specialized polar survival training for its seafarers in Mombetsu City, Hokkaido, ensuring the crew is adequately prepared for the challenging Arctic environment.
