The International Maritime Employers' Council (IMEC) has initiated a $500,000 funding program aimed at improving the retention and career progression of women in the maritime industry. This move comes as the sector faces difficulties in keeping female seafarers employed beyond their initial cadet training.
The new fund seeks to address a critical bottleneck where many women, despite completing their cadetships, do not continue their careers at sea. By providing targeted support, IMEC hopes to foster an environment where female seafarers can advance into more senior roles and sustain long-term careers within the industry.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, a more diverse and stable pool of seafarers, including a greater representation of women, could contribute to improved crew availability and potentially enhance operational efficiency on vessels. While the direct impact on immediate rates or capacity is minimal, a healthier seafarer pipeline supports overall industry stability and resilience, which indirectly benefits the entire supply chain.
