The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has released a study highlighting a significant technical issue with biofuel adoption in shipping. It found that when FAME-based biofuels are blended with conventional residual marine fuels, such as Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO), the resulting fuel mixture's viscosity can fall below the minimum operational threshold for mass flow meters (MFMs). These meters are crucial for accurately measuring the quantity of fuel delivered during bunkering operations.
This issue creates practical difficulties for shipowners and operators. If the fuel's viscosity is outside the MFM's validated range, the accuracy of the meter's readings can be compromised. This directly impacts the ability to verify that the correct quantity of fuel has been supplied, leading to potential disputes with bunker suppliers and challenges in demonstrating compliance with fuel consumption regulations.
For freight forwarders and their clients, this technical hurdle could indirectly affect bunker costs and operational reliability. Inaccurate fuel measurements might lead to overpaying for fuel or receiving less than expected, impacting voyage planning and potentially causing delays if re-bunkering is required.
