Indian regional airline FLY91 has announced a substantial purchase of 40 ATR 72-600 aircraft, with an estimated value of US$1 billion. This order is notable as the largest firm commitment for ATR aircraft in nearly ten years and the most significant ever placed by a regional airline. The carrier, which launched operations less than three years ago, is set to considerably expand its existing fleet of six aircraft.
This fleet expansion by FLY91 indicates a strong growth trajectory for regional air travel, particularly in emerging markets like India. For freight forwarders, while ATR 72-600s are primarily passenger aircraft, increased regional connectivity can indirectly benefit air cargo by opening up new feeder routes to larger hubs or improving overall network efficiency for express and e-commerce shipments. The addition of more aircraft to a regional network can enhance capacity and frequency, potentially offering more options for time-sensitive cargo in specific domestic or short-haul international lanes.
