Houston's bunker fuel market is currently experiencing constrained availability across several key grades. High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO) is particularly tight, with lead times extending to approximately 7-8 days for delivery. This suggests that immediate procurement of HSFO may be challenging for vessels.
Furthermore, at least two major suppliers in the port have confirmed they are exclusively offering Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO). For these grades, lead times are also extended, ranging between 5-6 days. Despite these supply constraints, the overall demand for bunker fuel in Houston has reportedly remained consistent compared to the previous week.
For freight forwarders and vessel operators, these extended lead times for bunker fuel in a major hub like Houston could impact vessel scheduling and operational costs. Forwarders should advise their carrier partners to plan bunker calls well in advance to avoid delays. The limited availability of HSFO might also necessitate a shift to VLSFO or LSMGO for some vessels, potentially affecting fuel strategies and expenses.
