MacGregor has announced a new agreement to deliver a full suite of cargo handling solutions for six 1,700 TEU containerships. These vessels, designed to operate on dual-fuel LNG, are currently under construction at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in India. The order was placed by the French shipping giant CMA CGM, indicating a continued investment in more environmentally friendly vessel technology.
This development means that new, modern container capacity will be entering the market, specifically tailored for LNG propulsion. For freight forwarders, the introduction of these vessels suggests a gradual shift towards carriers offering more sustainable shipping options, which could become a factor in route planning and carrier selection for environmentally conscious shippers. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity is likely minimal given the relatively small size and number of vessels, it contributes to the long-term trend of fleet modernization.
As these ships are completed and integrated into CMA CGM's fleet, they will support the carrier's operational network, potentially enhancing service reliability on specific trade lanes where they are deployed. Forwarders should monitor the deployment of such newbuilds as they can influence service offerings and potentially contribute to meeting future emissions regulations.
