DryDel Shipping, a Greek company, has finalized five-year time charter agreements with Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha ("K" Line) for four new Capesize bulk carriers. These vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage of 182,000 DWT, are being built by Namura Shipbuilding Co. in Japan. Two of the newbuilds are expected to be delivered in 2028, with the remaining two following in 2029. This agreement represents DryDel Shipping's first venture into owning and operating newbuild Capesize vessels.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the introduction of these modern, scrubber-equipped Capesize vessels could contribute to more stable dry bulk capacity in the coming years. The long-term charters suggest a commitment to specific trade lanes, potentially offering some predictability for large volume dry bulk shipments. The scrubber technology aims to mitigate fuel price volatility and comply with environmental regulations, which might translate into more competitive freight rates for shippers moving commodities like iron ore and coal.
