Demeter Energy has announced a significant feedstock supply agreement with Veransa Group for its planned biomethanol and carbon capture facility located at SeaPort Manatee in Florida. Under the terms of the agreement, Veransa Group will serve as the primary supplier, providing up to 325,000 tonnes of urban wood waste and green waste annually. This feedstock will be collected from municipal and regional sources throughout the greater Tampa Bay area and surrounding regions.
This development is crucial for the establishment of Demeter Energy's commercial-scale plant, which aims to produce biomethanol, a key alternative fuel for the maritime industry, while also incorporating carbon capture technology. The securement of a consistent and substantial feedstock supply is a critical step in moving the project forward.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this initiative signals a growing trend towards the availability of greener marine fuels. As more carriers commit to decarbonization targets, the production of biomethanol at facilities like this could contribute to a more diverse and accessible supply of low-emission bunker options. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity is not direct, the long-term implications include supporting sustainable shipping practices and potentially influencing future fuel surcharges as demand for alternative fuels increases.
