Bertling recently executed a significant logistics operation, transporting approximately 580 cubic meters of mining equipment from Gothenburg, Sweden, to the Manono Mine site in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This project involved handling several oversized components, with some units measuring up to 11.5 meters in length and weighing 53 tonnes.
The cargo was initially shipped from Gothenburg, Sweden, by sea, transiting through the port of Durban, South Africa. From Durban, the equipment was then transported inland by road to its final destination at the Manono Mine in the DRC.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this project highlights the complexities of multimodal heavy-lift and project cargo movements, particularly to landlocked regions in Africa. Such operations require meticulous planning for sea and road legs, including route surveys for oversized cargo, coordination with multiple carriers and port authorities, and navigating customs procedures in transit countries. The successful execution demonstrates expertise in managing challenging logistics chains and can serve as a benchmark for similar future projects, emphasizing the importance of specialized forwarding capabilities for remote mining destinations.
