Amazónica LNG, a Colombian entity specializing in the import, storage, and regasification of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), has officially joined SEA-LNG, a multi-sector industry coalition promoting LNG as a marine fuel. This move highlights Amazónica LNG's strategic focus on establishing infrastructure capable of supporting LNG bunkering operations along Colombia's Caribbean coastline.
The company, a collaboration between port logistics firm Retramar and private equity investor Affinity Energy, currently manages the Palermo LNG terminal located in Sitio Nuevo, near Barranquilla. This facility integrates a floating storage unit with regasification capabilities and small-scale LNG distribution, positioning it to serve both industrial and marine sectors.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the development of LNG bunkering infrastructure in Colombia could introduce more sustainable shipping options for routes touching the Caribbean. Increased availability of LNG as a marine fuel may contribute to reduced emissions for vessels operating in the region, aligning with growing environmental regulations and corporate sustainability goals. While direct rate impacts are not immediate, the long-term trend towards alternative fuels could influence carrier choices and potentially fuel surcharges. It signifies a step towards diversifying fuel sources and enhancing the region's role in green shipping initiatives.
