VIDA Bioenergy has officially launched biomethane production at its Bernheze facility in the Netherlands. The plant is set to gradually increase its output to a full capacity of 8 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. This marks VIDA Bioenergy's second operational site in the Netherlands and its third across its entire portfolio.
Strategically located in a region with high livestock density, the Bernheze facility is engineered to process approximately 72,000 tonnes of agricultural feedstock annually. Through anaerobic digestion and advanced upgrading technologies, this feedstock is transformed into renewable biomethane. Additionally, the process yields around 14,000 tonnes of digestate, which is then returned to the agricultural sector for beneficial use.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the increased production of biomethane signifies a growing availability of alternative fuels, particularly for the maritime sector. This development supports the broader industry trend towards decarbonization and the adoption of more sustainable shipping practices. While not directly impacting immediate freight rates or capacity, it contributes to the long-term shift in fuel supply chains and could eventually influence bunker choices and costs for carriers committed to green initiatives.
