Hong Kong-based shipping company EGPN has placed an order for two 1,900 TEU containerships with CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding. These feeder vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2029 and represent EGPN's first venture into the container shipping sector, expanding its existing fleet.
This move signifies a strategic diversification for EGPN, which traditionally operates in other shipping segments. By adding containerships, the company aims to broaden its operational scope and capitalize on the demand within the feeder vessel market.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the addition of new feeder capacity, even several years out, contributes to the overall fleet growth. While these specific vessels are not immediately available, they indicate a long-term trend of investment in smaller containerships, which could eventually impact regional trade lanes by increasing slot availability and potentially influencing intra-Asia or other short-sea shipping rates. Forwarders should monitor such newbuild orders as they contribute to future market capacity and competitive dynamics.
