Capital Ship Management, K Shipbuilding, and Lloyd's Register have initiated a joint development project focused on integrating wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) into Medium Range (MR) product tankers. The primary objective is to determine if these systems can provide commercially viable efficiency improvements for standard tanker operations. While WAPS technology has seen adoption in other maritime sectors, such as bulk carriers and specialized vessels, its potential within the MR tanker market remains largely unexamined.
This project will specifically investigate the feasibility of installing WAPS on a 50,000 DWT MR tanker. The findings could influence future vessel designs and operational strategies within the tanker segment, potentially leading to reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the successful implementation of WAPS on MR tankers could contribute to more sustainable shipping options and potentially stabilize or reduce bunker-related surcharges in the long term, as fuel efficiency improves.
