The classification society ABS has provided Approval in Principle (AiP) for a novel 15,000 TEU container vessel design. This innovative concept, a collaboration between the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), features small modular reactors (SMRs) as its primary power source. The design integrates two SMRs along with energy storage systems to ensure operational redundancy and optimized power distribution. A key safety feature is the central positioning of the reactors, engineered to minimize potential risks from wave impact and collisions.
For freight forwarders and supply chain managers, this development signals a long-term shift towards alternative propulsion in maritime shipping. While commercial deployment is still years away, successful nuclear-powered vessels could offer zero-emission transport with potentially higher schedule reliability due to extended range and independence from conventional bunkering.
