Varamar has announced its entry into ship ownership, starting with the acquisition of four new 5,200 DWT multipurpose vessels. The company also has ambitions to expand this fleet further, potentially adding up to eight more ships of similar specifications. This development signifies a strategic shift for Varamar, moving beyond its traditional role as a charterer into direct asset ownership.
This move comes at a time when the market for modern multipurpose vessels (MPVs) and breakbulk cargo transport is reportedly tightening. By investing in its own fleet, Varamar is positioning itself to capitalize on this demand and secure capacity for its operations.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, Varamar's expansion into vessel ownership could introduce a new player with dedicated capacity in the multipurpose and breakbulk sectors. This might offer additional options for project cargo and oversized shipments, potentially influencing routing decisions and capacity availability on specific trade lanes. Increased competition or new capacity could lead to more stable or even competitive rates for certain types of specialized cargo.
