ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HD HHI) have formalized a joint development agreement focused on creating a design for a 50,000 DWT oil and chemical tanker. This vessel is specifically intended to operate under the U.S. flag. The agreement stipulates that ABS will conduct a thorough review of HD HHI's design to ensure full compliance with both ABS Rules and relevant U.S. regulations.
This initiative is significant for the U.S. maritime sector, as it aims to bolster the domestic fleet with new, compliant tonnage. For freight forwarders and shippers, the development of new U.S.-flagged vessels could contribute to increased capacity and potentially more stable shipping options for domestic and international routes requiring U.S.-flagged carriers, particularly for specialized cargo like oil and chemicals. This could also impact routing flexibility and reduce reliance on foreign-flagged vessels for specific trade lanes.
The collaboration highlights a strategic effort to combine HD HHI's shipbuilding expertise with ABS's classification and regulatory knowledge to meet the stringent requirements for U.S.-flagged vessels. The successful development and eventual construction of such a tanker could support national maritime interests and enhance the country's capabilities in crude oil and refined product transportation.
