SAL Heavy Lift is expanding its operational capacity by chartering three new Octopus 12.6-class vessels on a long-term basis. These newbuildings are scheduled to join the company's existing fleet of heavy-lift ships in 2028. The vessels, designed by CSSC-SDARI, are multipurpose heavy-lift ships that incorporate a spacious box-shaped cargo hold. A key feature of these vessels is their substantial combined crane capacity of 500 tonnes, which will enable them to handle large and complex project cargo.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this fleet expansion by SAL Heavy Lift signifies an increase in available capacity for oversized and heavy-lift shipments, particularly for project cargo. The enhanced crane capacity and large cargo holds will provide more flexibility for handling challenging loads, potentially improving scheduling options and reducing transit times for specialized projects. This development could lead to more competitive rates and better service reliability for breakbulk and project logistics, especially for routes where such specialized vessels are in high demand.
