The European Combined Transport association (UIRR) and the Dutch association RailGood have jointly appealed to the Netherlands' Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Their request seeks intervention to resolve persistent blockades occurring in Rotterdam, which are severely disrupting international rail freight operations.
The ongoing disruptions are creating significant challenges for intermodal transport, particularly for cargo moving via rail to and from the Port of Rotterdam. These blockades lead to delays, increased operational costs, and reduced schedule reliability, directly impacting the efficiency of supply chains.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, these blockades translate into unpredictable transit times and potential demurrage charges. It necessitates constant communication with clients and carriers to manage expectations and find alternative solutions, which may include rerouting or increased reliance on other transport modes if feasible. The instability in Rotterdam could also lead to higher rail freight rates due to operational inefficiencies and congestion.
