The Port of Antwerp-Bruges has officially appointed Rob Smeets as its new Chief Executive Officer. His tenure will span six years, succeeding Jacques Vandermeiren, who previously announced his resignation in April. The selection process involved a comprehensive recruitment drive by the Board of Directors, which included evaluating multiple candidates and conducting interviews.
Smeets possesses more than 20 years of experience within the port authority, having served in various senior leadership roles. This extensive background is expected to provide continuity and leverage his deep understanding of the port's operations and strategic objectives.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this appointment signals a period of stable leadership at a major European gateway. A CEO with long-standing internal experience is likely to maintain existing strategic directions and operational efficiencies, rather than initiating immediate, radical changes. This continuity can be beneficial for long-term planning regarding vessel calls, terminal operations, and hinterland connections through the port. Forwarders should anticipate a steady course in port development and policy, allowing for predictable operational environments.
