Perdana Petroleum, a Malaysian company specializing in offshore marine support services, has committed $33.94 million (RM134.49 million) to construct two new anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels. This investment is a key component of the company's ongoing fleet rejuvenation strategy.
The two AHTS vessels, each boasting a 60-tonne bollard-pull capacity, will be built by China's Aulong Shipbuilding. According to a regulatory filing with Bursa Malaysia, the delivery of these vessels is anticipated to occur within 730 and 820 days, respectively.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, while this news directly impacts the offshore energy sector, it signals continued investment in specialized maritime assets. This could indirectly affect the availability and pricing of specific vessel types for project cargo or heavy-lift operations in the region, as new builds can free up older tonnage or enhance overall fleet capabilities for complex offshore projects. The long lead time for delivery suggests a strategic, long-term approach to fleet modernization rather than an immediate capacity injection.
