ABB has been awarded a contract by Cochin Shipyard to deliver electric power and propulsion systems for two new tugboats. These vessels are being constructed as part of India's Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP), an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable maritime operations. The tugs are slated for delivery to Polestar Maritime in 2027 and will be deployed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA).
This development signifies a move towards decarbonizing port services in India, aligning with global efforts to reduce emissions in the maritime sector. The GTTP encourages the adoption of greener technologies for port and harbor craft.
For freight forwarders and logistics operations, the introduction of electric tugs at major ports like JNPA contributes to overall port efficiency and environmental compliance. While not directly impacting freight rates or capacity, it supports the broader sustainability goals of supply chains, potentially influencing carrier choices and port attractiveness for environmentally conscious shippers.
