The European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) is campaigning to highlight the critical issue of fatigue among professional truck drivers. The organization chose June 21st, the longest day of the year, for its annual Driver Fatigue Action Day, symbolizing the daily struggle many drivers face with extended hours and insufficient rest.
The ETF, along with its affiliated trade unions, aims to increase public and industry awareness regarding the dangers associated with driver fatigue. This ongoing problem significantly impacts road safety, driver well-being, and operational efficiency within the European road transport sector.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, widespread driver fatigue could lead to several operational challenges. These include potential delays in road freight movements due to stricter enforcement of driving hours regulations, increased risk of accidents affecting cargo integrity and delivery schedules, and potential upward pressure on road freight rates as carriers may need to adjust staffing and scheduling to comply with fatigue management protocols. Forwarders should anticipate possible disruptions and factor in longer transit times or higher costs for certain road-based shipments, especially for long-haul routes. It also underscores the importance of working with carriers that prioritize driver welfare and compliance.
